Diner was unlucky

YOU recently published a letter from a visitor to Eastbourne expressing disappointment at the meal she had had at the Wish Tower cafe.

In the light of last week's news item about its future, I should like to return to the subject. As someone who has eaten there regularly over many years I can only say that she must have been very unlucky on that particular day. My own experience has been that the food has always been well cooked, of good quality, quickly served, and moreover served by friendly and obliging staff who must smarted over the criticism levelled at them in that letter.

Your correspondent cannot be aware of the great service the cafe also provides for people seeking a quiet and restful time with a cup of tea in the large area given over to this particular facility. They can enjoy under cover one of the best sea views to be found in Eastbourne, particularly valuable on cold days out of season when older people might not wish to sit outside.

No, I am sure that allowing people to sit undisturbed for an hour or so cannot be regarded as good business by those who might see a more profitable use for the sun lounge, but our council should regard the whole enterprise as being one that benefits a great many of our residents, and if it came to a toss up between retaining the Wish Tower cafe or Airbourne, I know which one would get my money.

The council's disclosure of plans to upgrade the site demonstrates once again its lack of business acumen shown in last year's Airbourne fiasco and it will be deluding itself if it thinks that massive investment by someone (who, I wonder) in new premises will not have the effect of creating a venue with prices that will rule out most of its regular patrons.

And there is indeed the small matter of the plaque at the entrance to the cafe. It explains why this facility was provided in the first place.
