The annual service for the American airmen who died when their plane, Ruthless, crashed at Butts Brow in 1942 was marked on Remembrance Sunday.

The service was organised by Willingdon and Jevington 
arish Councils and was 
carried out by Fr Michael Maine, of St Marys Church, 
Willingdon.

The service was attended by MP Steven Lloyd, Mayor of Eastbourne,Mike Thompson, the leaders of Willingdon and Jevington Parish Councils and around 40 members of the public.

Among the congregation was a visiting family from Hacoda, Alabama, USA. Curtis Maloy, his wife Sheila and their daughter Summer were present to remember Mr Maloy’s great uncle,

S/Sgt Aubrey Maloy, age 21, who was a waist gunner in the B-24 Liberator Ruthless, and was killed when the aircraft crashed on the hillside in February 1942.

Mr Maloy , an ex US Army pilot, continues the flying tradition by test flying Apache helicopters in America.
