THE EASTBOURNE Hospitality Association Half Marathon takes place on March 4 and is sponsored by chartered surveyors Reid+Dean.
The event has grown to attract more than 1000 entrants from all over the country and usually some from abroad too – so it’s also a great publicity tool for the town.
Last year was the first time prizes were awarded to Business Team entries as the organisers widened the appeal by creating another element of competition, and this year a splendid array of prizes is on offer. In addition to prizes for the main event the winners of the junior races too will have something to take home.
Mike Reid of the main sponsors is delighted with the generosity of the towns businesses in giving the following: free weekend hire of a Mercedes Benz from Lookers Mercedes – a “lucky dip” prize, lunch for two at the Grand Hotel, Family Rover tickets from Stagecoach, a family pass to Michelham Priory, a mini corporate day at Eastbourne Borough Football Club, a £20 voucher to La Locanda del Duca Restaurant, a family ticket for Eastbourne Miniature Steam Railway, four tickets to a Bandstand 1812 concert, family grounds pass to Herstmonceux Castle, lunch for two at the Belgian Café, a £20 voucher to Pommodoro Restaurant, and four tickets to see Funny Peculiar at the Congress Theatre.
Mr Reid said, “This is a brilliant event for Eastbourne because it combines so many positive things.
“More than 1000 people will enjoy running along the fantastic seafront which takes in the foot of the Downs and a tour of Sovereign Harbour; spectators will enjoy a lively scene on an early Spring morning; dozens of volunteers (who need a really big thank you) will be on hand to assist with marshalling the road closures and drinks points and many youngsters will get perhaps their first taste of an organised athletic competition.
“Finally, the event raises around £12-15,000 each year which is given to largely to recognised charities, but we also arrange for a number of smaller donations to schools, sports clubs, societies and individuals which would otherwise struggle to facilitate their special project”
