A developer says it may invest up to £600,000 into Stone Cross if controversial plans to be build 120 houses in the area are approved.

Developers Bellway submitted plans to build 120 new homes south of Rattle Road in Stone Cross, after outline planning permission for development of the site was granted by Wealden District Council in April 2013.

The plans, as well as several other proposed developments in the area, have proven unpopular with Stone Cross residents who say local infrastructure would struggle to cope with the additional houses. Residents with neighbouring properties have also raised concerns about the design of the Rattle Road project.

Managing director for Bellway’s Kent division, Chris Moore said, “Our design and planning teams have worked hard to make sure that as well as providing the right mix of homes to cater for the area’s housing needs, this development will also blend seamlessly with its surroundings and be built with the existing character of the area in mind.

“We will also be making significant contributions to the local community as part of a S106 agreement for the site if plans are approved, which both our new residents and the existing community would benefit from.”

If the proposals are approved, the company says it will invest £280,000 on primary education in the area, £65,000 to build an off-site playing space and £90,000 to improve local bus services. It says it would also make contributions to highways improvements, recycling, a travel plan and a children’s play area.

The application is currently being considered by Wealden District Council.
