Specialist medical equipment has been presented to Eastbourne District General Hospital.
Medi Tech Trust handed over the equipment recently.
The equipment is so new and advanced that it is still awaiting its patent.
Known as an UMP set, the Ultra-Mini PCNL dramatically increases the treatment range for the removal of kidney stones once conventional therapies have reached their limits.
In layman’s terms, a tiny tube – half of the size of the regular tube – is placed into the patient’s side to reach kidney stones, which are then destroyed by laser, radically reducing the possibility of vessel tears or bleedings.
The net effect is easier access to stones for surgeons, with less discomfort and a quicker return to active life for patients.
Bob Lewis from Medi Tech Trust said, “Although a completely separate entity from that of maternity, the announcement recently has reinforced our decision to publicly announce our gift, which has only been made possible through the generous donations made by Eastbourne residents and associations.”
The presentation was made in rooms adjacent to operating theatres.
