A hamper containing examples of Herstmonceux’s best trades has been won by a woman from Windmill Hill.

Helen Dale, 45, regularly shops in the village and was one of more than 60 people who entered the competition which ran from Valentine’s Day to the end of February.

The competition launched after shop keepers believed their village was the most romantic in Sussex as it was formed following a marriage between Idonea Herst and Drogo Monceux, the great grandson of William the Conqueror.

Helen said, “I was delighted to win the trug which contained many goodies made and sold by local companies.

“I regularly shop in Herstmonceux as there are a whole host of independent shops and services which are of high quality – you also get a level of customer service which you may not get elsewhere.”

The competition was supported by South East Water which is currently in the final stages of laying a new water main in the village. The work should be finished by June 28.
