DGH cancer referral ‘poor’

EASTBOURNE’S hospital has been singled out for its poor performance in referring potential cancer patients.

In a clinical audit carried out by East Sussex Hospital NHS Trust (ESHT), which oversees Eastbourne District General Hospital (DGH) and Conquest Hospital in Hastings, it was revealed just 70.9 per cent of patients with symptoms of breast cancer were being referred to consultants by GPs within two weeks during October - missing its target by 17.1 per cent.

The trust also underperformed in September, referring just 81.5 per cent of patients. The DGH was identified by the primary care trust East Sussex Downs and Weald, which controls funding to the ESHT, as suffering from a shortage of consultants and advised the trust to recruit a breast surgeon.
