East Sussex County Council has opened a public consultation about the use of loading bays in the town centre.
For years, Eastbourne MP Stephen Lloyd has been lobbying the County Council to allow private vehicles to park in loading bays after 6pm.
A more flexible remit for the loading bays in Seaside Road has been introduced, allowing restaurant customers to park there in the evenings.
Now, the county council has announced it will be holding a consultation to obtain the public’s views on installing a similar level of flexibility in other areas of the town.
Stephen said, “I am delighted to hear that the county council has listened to my and the Chamber of Commerce’s calls by announcing this consultation. Parking is difficult in our town centre at night, yet we have dozens of empty loading bays sitting there, unused.
“Demand for parking spaces will only increase as the £85 million Arndale Centre regeneration brings in many new customers. Opening up these loading bays will make a massive difference to local businesses and restaurants.”
An East Sussex County Council spokesman said, “We are currently reviewing the way loading bays in Eastbourne are being used and would ask people to give us their views by taking part in the consultation before it ends on Monday, April 7 .”
