There are plans to open a new post office in Wish Hill to replace the branch closing down in Freshwater Square.
According to Post Office Ltd, the long-time Freshwater Square Post Office has been forced to close due to the retirement of the former agent.
The new location will be The Old Post Office Shop, 116 Wish Hill, which will open for longer hours than the Freshwater Square branch – and will have a ‘modern, open-plan’ design.
A public consultation started on April 10, which will run until May 22. If you would like to respond email email@example.com or send a letter to ‘FREEPOST PO Consultation.’
MP Stephen Lloyd said, “The Freshwater Square Post Office was a popular local shop and served an important role in the community.
“I have been very anxious to ensure that its closure would not mean a loss of local access to Post Office services and so have been in regular contact with senior managers at Post Office Ltd.
“Following their announcement, I have organised to meet with them in the coming weeks to ensure that people who were used to the old location will still be able to access all the services they require without difficulty.
“This decision will provoke a lot of feeling locally, and I would urge everyone one who feels strongly over the issue to make their views known to the consultation.
“It is important that Post Office Managers listen to the views of local residents.”
Post Office regional network manager for South & East England Mark Lawrence said, “We understand how important having a Post Office is to residents in this area of Eastbourne and we are confident that this new modern branch will make it easier for our customers to do business with us and also secure services for the future.”
“The proposed changes to the branch are part of a three-year investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office, that will see around 6000 branches (about half the Post Office network) converting to new-style branches. The investment marks a commitment to no more branch closure programmes.”
Opening hours at the proposed new location will be Monday to Friday: 9am – 5.30pm; Saturday: 9am – 1pm – which would give Willingdon customers an extra 5.5 hours a week.
Customers will be able to carry out a range of Post Office services including automated banking services, bill and budget payment schemes, Post Office card account, Postal Orders and postage; inland letters / packets (including Signed For and Special Delivery), inland parcels, international letters, small packets and printed papers.
