A HAILSHAM Meals on Wheels manager has won a top industry award for services to the community.
John Figgins, 35, received the ‘Social Award’ from Cost Sector Catering, after being nominated by leading members of the catering industry.
He was presented with the honour by actress and comedian, Helen Lederer, at a ceremony in London last month.
The award recognises the person who has improved services for care clients and includes nominations from private, public and voluntary organisations.
The judges particularly liked John’s energy and range of ideas which linked catering to a number of other initiatives which improved the quality of life for people that need care, helped to alert care and emergency services and educated young people about community care.
Over the last year he has worked with the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) to promote fire safety for elderly and vulnerable clients who get Meals on Wheels.
He also arranged for schoolchildren to be told all about the service in their classroom, so they understand the issues facing older and vulnerable people.
John, a senior contracts manage, has worked for the council for three years.
He said, “I am very pleased to get this award. It is not just about me, it is about the whole team that aim to do their best for the residents of East Sussex.
“We want to provide the very best service for our community. It is not just about dishing out meals, it is about ensuring the well-being and care of people and educating children about the challenges that others can face.”
