Hailsham teenager arrested as police divers recover burglary items in river

A 16-year-old boy from Hailsham has been arrested after police divers recovered items from a river which are believed to have been stolen in a burglary last week.

Divers from Sussex Police’s specialist search unit, were searching the River Ouse near the Phoenix Causeway bridge in Lewes on Monday when they found some items.

Last Friday, a home at Hamsey, near Lewes was broken into, The burglary was discovered at 3.24pm when the householder returned home after being out for about two hours and discovered the break-in. Cash, computer equipment, jewellery and medals were taken.

About ten minutes later, a car was stopped at a service station in Malling Street, Lewes, when two men and a boy were arrested on suspicion of burglary.

A 23-year-old man from Uckfield, a 22-year-old man from Maresfield and the 16-year-old boy from Hailsham were questioned and later released on bail until August 22.

Sussex Police launched Operation Magpie last month to tackle burglary across the county
