CHILDREN in Hailsham have been invited to participate in a challenging race which combines running an swimming.
The aquathlon, which will take place at Freedom Leisure Hailsham on Sunday, April 15, is part of a Sussex-wide initiative designed to give youngsters a flavour of the Olympic sport of triathlon in a fun and safe environment.
The event is open to young people between eight and 14 years and is supported by Triathlon England to ensure there is a medal and goodie bag for all competitors.
Stuart Smith, centre manager of Freedom Leisure, Hailsham, said, “This is a great opportunity for young people to get a taste of the triathlon and feel that sense of achievement when they cross the finish line to the cheers of their family and friends.
“With the event planned for April there’s plenty of time for them to pick a distance and start practising to be like a triathlete.”
With distances ranging from 25m to 300m in the pool and 500m to 3000m on the run there are races for children of all ages and abilities.
There will also be a novice team event so parents and family members can help children who are feeling nervous about getting around the course.
Children who enjoy the aquathlon can then register for full triathlon events for kids (swim, cycle, run) in nearby Uckfield, Crowborough or Rye.
