A TEAM of firefighters from Eastbourne is gearing up for a charity ride on scooters across four countries in four days.
The Blazing Saddles team, all members of Green Watch at the Whitley Road fire station, will embark on their major fundraiser in May next year.
The firefighters have just had scooters donated and are now appealing for help with sponsorship for fuel, crash helmets and sweatshirts.
The 14 firefighters and a support team will travel more than 1,000 miles on six scooters wearing their familiar bright orange kit.
One of the organisers, Bob Newton, said, “We will be visiting all four countries of the British Isles in four days and decided to undertake a long way round style charity scooter ride.
“We wanted to make the challenge even harder by using scooters instead of our usual more powerful chariots of choice.
“The charities who will be benefiting from the idea will be the Fire Fighters Charity and Clic Sargent, which looks after children suffering with cancer and leukaemia.”
Dan Powell, community fundraising manager at CLIC Sargent, said the charity was very grateful to Green Watch for all their support and added, “On behalf of all of the families and children we work with here in East Sussex a huge thank you to all of Green Watch for their fantastic support for CLIC Sargent.
“We could not carry on providing its vital services to children and young people with cancer without them.”
The other charity to benefit from the fundraiser, the Fire Fighters Charity provides fire service personnel during their times of need, and assists thousands of individuals every year, by providing pioneering treatment and support services.
Anyone wishing to sponsor the Blazing Saddles or make a donation can do so at the fire station or by calling 638418.
