Keen gardeners and residents with green fingers are being urged to help spruce up two shopping areas in Eastbourne.

The Town Team is running the project and is looking for keen gardeners to help.

On Saturday May 17 between 10am and 12.30pm, a team of volunteers will be planting up to 90 tubs and hanging baskets with edible plants and flowers in a bid to “bring a bit of colour and interest to Little Chelsea and Grand Hotel Buildings”.

A spokesperson for the group said, “Would you be willing to come along for a morning and help brighten up our town? We’ll be in Eastbourne Town Hall car park from 10am to 12.30pm?”

The initiative is the latest project from the Town Team, which was formed in April 2012 initially to bid for cash from the Mary Portas Pilot scheme to boost town centre economies.

A spokesperson said, “The first Portas Pilot bid was not successful. But between then and now we have learned a lot as a group, defined ourselves more clearly, discovered a real, mutual passion for our town centre and its future, and won a meaningful cash mandate from Eastbourne Borough Council. So we’re reapplying as we speak.

“Our vision is to leave behind the pervasive ‘God’s Waiting Room’ label.”
