A reckless thief with a head for heights has stolen the ornate weathervane which stood proudly atop the tower at All Souls Church in Eastbourne.
They took the golden cockerel after scaling the 83ft structure via scaffolding put up for repairs by Clarke Roofing Southern Ltd. The free-standing campanile tower at Grade II Listed All Souls in Susans Road is the subject of a £142,000 refurbishment scheme.
The weathervane, which is about 2ft high, had recently been given a new coat of gold paint. Peter Wood, Warden Emeritus, said, “It’s amazing no-one saw what was going on and the weathervane must have been difficult to carry when climbing. The police would like to hear from anyone who might have information.”
Built in the Byzantine style, the spectacular church opened in July 1882.
