A fishing record is believed to have been set when Eastbourne fisherman Gerald Sargeant landed a cod weighing in at 16lb, 5oz and 8dr earlier this month. He caught the cod during a beach fishing competition on Eastbourne seafront on March 5 which attracted 18 anglers. Competition organiser Steve Frost said, “The Eastbourne Nomads had one of their usual club beach fishing competitions and Gerald Sargeant caught a record cod. This is a Nomads record, an Anderida club record and as far as I know, it’s an Eastbourne record. Gerald set out to target codling (smaller cod), but got more than he bargained for. He also caught two smaller codling and a pouting bringing his total weight up to 20lb 7oz.

“Obviously Gerald won the competition.”
