Nus Ghani MP, with other members of the Gatwick Coordination Group (GCG), has welcomed the Airports Commission’s unequivocal endorsement of Heathrow as the location for the UK’s new runway.

In a statement released by the Wealden MP this morning (Wednesday, July 1), it said: “The Airports Commission has made a decision in the national interest.

“The Commission was faced with a choice between the strong business case for Heathrow and the flawed case for Gatwick: the Heathrow option has a national economic benefit in excess of £100billion more than Gatwick and four times more new jobs spread across the UK, while the Gatwick option lacked resilient surface transport infrastructure and sufficient extra local labour force.

“Unsurprisingly, the Commission has found in favour of Heathrow, the significantly better option for Britain. The report clearly shows Heathrow can expand while meeting the key economic, infrastructure and environmental tests.

“Having “unanimously concluded” the benefits of Heathrow are “significantly greater”, the case for Gatwick is dead and buried.”

Following the news, Nus added: “I now call upon the Prime Minister to swiftly accept the Commission’s recommendation, to end any further uncertainty, and to get on with providing the airport capacity Britain needs to compete for trade and investment and to remain an important aviation hub in the twenty-first century.”
