Former head of Park College Mike Dixon has spent the last six months working as part of the project development team for the inaugural poetry recitation competition, Poetry By Heart.

The finals were held at the weekend in the National Portrait Gallery. East Sussex was represented by Brandon Prestano from Uckfield Community Technology College who made it through to the last eight of a competition which has involved thousands of students.

Mike said, “It has been a great privilege working on a pioneering project with a very small but dedicated team. On Friday we had the forty regional finalists and then on Saturday we witnessed some remarkable recitations by the eight national finalists.

“The eventual winner from Nottingham produced an awe-inspiring performance. All 40 of the finalists stayed with us for the whole weekend and were wonderfully supportive of each other. The future funding of the project is being discussed at the moment but we hope to have some good news to announce by the end of May.

“Eastbourne Academy took part in the competition this year and did very well and we hope that other schools in Eastbourne will join in the fun next year in the search for a national champion for 2014.”
