Youngsters give councillors a grilling
TWO councillors were given a grilling over issues affecting young people as part of a film which will be shown in schools.
Natalie-Jane Teese, 21, Harriet Elwood, 19 and Keighley McPherson, 22, quizzed Bob Lacey, chairman of East Sussex County Council and Lib Dem borough councillor Andrew Godwin.
They challenged the councillors on issues such as knife crime, drug use, anti-social behaviour and the Save The DGH campaign.
The interviews will feature in a DVD on democracy and citizenship which will be shown in East Sussex schools in the autumn.
Natalie-Jane said it had changed her view on politicians.
She said, "They were more in touch than I thought they would be. They actually agreed with us on a few of the issues."
But Harriet added, "They weren't very in touch with the issues around drug use in Eastbourne but I think we made them aware of it."
As part of the DVD, Sussex Downs College student Tash Cook, 18,
questioned Herald reporter Andrew Raeburn on the way young people are portrayed in the media.
Similar interviews are taking place in the Wealden, Hastings, Rother and Lewes areas of the county.
Filmmaker Mark Birbeck, who filmed the interviews, said, "The aim of it is to increase young people's participation in politics.
"The issues are different in different areas. In areas like Eastbourne people are interested in crime and anti-social behaviour.
"In rural areas they're more concerned about how to get from A to B."
