Beach clean up

Eastbourne Soroptimists donned their rubber gloves for a beach clean-up at Pinnacle Point.

The effort was part of the Marine Conservation Society's national beach cleaning weekend.

The items collected were carefully recorded and the totals sent on to the Marine Conservation Society.

Amongst these items were 94 empty plastic bottles, 41 metal drink cans, plus numerous empty plastic food containers.

"This a sad reminder that so many picnickers are not disposing of their litter sensibly," said a group spokesperson.

"It is also a sad fact that it is estimated over a million marine birds and mammals die every year from entanglement or ingestion of plastics.

"What a very sobering thought, when on average worldwide, there are 46,000 pieces of plastic litter in every square mile of ocean."
