Fate of cafe’s smoking shelter to be decided by council planners

A town centre shisha and coffee lounge is hoping town planners will let them keep a smoking shelter they put up without permission.

Keyif Shisha And Coffee Lounge put up the canopy and smoking shelter in the yard of the property in Susans Road in 2012 but failed to ask for planning permission from Eastbourne Borough Council.

Now owner Onur Erciyas has applied for retrospective permission and the issue will be discussed by town planners tonight (Tuesday).

A council planning officer is recommending permission be given and said, “The shelter was originally constructed without planning consent in 2012, for the purpose of providing a covered seating area for users of the café all year round including in bad or rainy weather.

“The coffee lounge is aimed predominantly at the Turkish community offers a venue for playing backgammon.

“The existing smoking shelter sought for retention is not considered to have a detrimental impact to the surrounding conservation area.

“The structure, which provides an area under which smokers, and shisha pipe smokers can shelter in inclement weather is not considered to have an unacceptable impact on the amenities of the adjoining residents, therefore it is recommended that planning permission is granted.”
