Family History Society of Eastbourne and District - May meeting report
MEMBERS showed their own family history research at the May meeting with three members giving short talks outlining an aspect of their own research.
Helen Warren spoke about a family mystery she had unearthed and how using a bit of detective work she had proved that in the middle of the 19th century her great-grandfather had changed his name from George Wragg to Thomas Greaves. Helen also showed a collage she had put together telling the story of her great-grandfather's life.
Bob Spilstead's talk was called Family Remembrances – Fact or Fiction. Bob said there were two family stories that he wanted to prove or disprove – the one concerning the highwayman who was hanged for murder he never found any truth in but the story featuring an ancestor who kept a pub in Rye proved to be more accurate. Bob discovered that long ago his ancestor had been landlord of the Flushing Inn, the building is now a restaurant displaying a medieval wall painting that was discovered under the panelling.
Norma Weir gave the final talk entitled Inventories in Genealogy. Norma said that if you were lucky an inventory of an ancestor's belongings might be found at a county record office. The inventory gave an account of the deceased's house listing the rooms, including the contents. This gave a source of information about the way of life and social standing of the long dead forebear.
