A MUM and her two young children escaped in the nick of time as a fire gutted their home.
The 28-year-old woman and the youngsters, aged six and two, managed to get out of their Percival Road home before despite the fire ravaging the terrace house.
It started shortly before 11pm last night and, according to local fire crews, the family was alerted by a smoke alarm – with the mum grabbing her children and fleeing through the back door moments before the blaze took hold throughout the house.
An investigation into the fire is now underway, with Eastbourne CID in the house this morning to try and piece together what happened.
The early indication is that it started in the lounge.
The home and those directly either side were still cordoned off with police tape when the Herald visited the scene today.
Neighbours confirmed the family had got out but were puzzled as to how the fire was started.
One said, “It shows how important smoke alarms are.”
