EASTBOURNE crematorium is in line for a facelift.

Town planners have given the green light to extend the building in Hide Hollow to provide a new family room and records store.

The extension will also house a new plant room which will control mercury emissions from cremators and the existing four cremator ovens will be replaced with three more energy efficient units.

Planning officer Suzanne West said, “The proposed plant room will be located in an area that is currently a service yard, immediately adjacent to the chapel and cremator building. The new extensions within the inner courtyard are required to extend the existing records room, which has become too small to meet operational needs, and accommodate a new family room to provide a quiet and dedicated area for bereaved family members attending services.

It is also proposed to extend the main reception to improve disabled access into the building with the provision of level access and automatic entrance doors. The opportunity has also been taken to re-route the large ducts that currently feed from the cremators to the main flue, and are clearly visible on the approach to the building by visitors, within the existing building so they are no longer externally visible.”

Eastbourne Borough Council’s planning committee approved the planning application at its meeting last week.
