Fishermen in Eastbourne have seen their calls for a fairer share of the country’s catch backed by a string of European MPs.
The majority of boats found in Eastbourne fit into the under 10 metre category, meaning they are among those struggling to make ends meet under the current deal, which favours the larger vessels.
A host of the region’s MEPs have already signalled their support for the campaign, which has seen around 15,000 across the south coast sign a petition demanding the Government acts to safeguard the industry’s future. Sharon Bowles (Lib Dem), Catherine Bearder (Lib Dem), Peter Skinner (Labour), and Keith Taylor (Green) have thrown their weight behind the campaign.
Crucial negotiations are about to take place in Brussels and campaigners and fishermen alike are praying for a radical reform of the EU Common Fisheries Policy.
