After a record year, the Eastbourne Hospitality Association Half Marathon is open for entries once again to keen runners taking part on March 3 2013
With more than 1,400 taking part earlier this year, including entries from Belgium and Italy, organisers are calling on runners, joggers and walkers to enter now and begin training with less than four months to go until the event.
Following some impressive runs in recent years, the record for completing the course currently stands at 1 hour and 11 minutes, and organisers are hoping that the success of the Olympic year may give runners the added boost to break event records in 2013.
Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, Cllr Carolyn Heaps said, “What a fantastic opportunity to improve your fitness, raise money for charity and join in this great fun event which gets more and more popular every year.
“ There is always such a tremendous atmosphere and an amazing array of athletes taking part, some from all over the country – a great advert for Eastbourne.”
The event which is sponsored by Reid+Dean, kicks off at Princes Park on March 3 at 10am and has become a popular run for fitness fans, with many raising money for local charities.
Now in its 9th year, the event attracts runners from all over the UK, and includes live music along the route.
Taking in a 13 mile route along Eastbourne’s fantastic seafront, the course includes a mile-long hill in Meads and the scenic Sovereign Harbour. Younger runners can also join in the challenge with a 1km race for under 12’s and a 2km race for under 17’s, making it a grea t family event. Event organiser Rupert Ashford said, “Since our launch we’ve raised an amazing £110,000 for local charities and this year I am delighted that two very worthy causes, Chestnut Tree House and Regain (the Trust for Sports Tetraplegics), will be the main beneficiaries.”
