VOLUNTEERS are needed to help with the Birling Gap Safety and Rescue Boat. Both shore and boat crew are currently needed to help the service continue its work.
The boat operates from Birling Gap and covers the stretch of coast from the Beachy Head Lighthouse along the Seven Sisters to Cuckmere Beach.
Phil Gozna, operations manager from the service said, “The majority of rescues are walkers getting cut off by the tide although many incidents are attended. We also assist the Coastguard and RNLI when requested.
“We are not on a call-out system so have to man the station at weekends and bank holidays. We need volunteers who can give time to crew the boat and just as importantly crew the shore for launching and recovery..
“Full training in boat handling, radio communications and winch operation are provided.
“Ours is a fulfilling and exciting part of an important service and, as a charity, we are also dependent on donations and currently looking for local businesses to sponsor us.”
