ELDERLY residents at an Eastbourne nursing home are learning to use the internet thanks to a grant from the Department of Health.

Hardwick House, in Hardwick Road, worked together with the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) to give residents internet access with the primary aim of improving communication through the Get Connected Investment Project funded by the Department of Health.

Fiona Brittain from Hardwick House said, “Since the three computers arrived last week we have had huge interest.

“We have set up email addresses for each resident and have helped people use Google earth to see places they used to live.

“It is the most amazing feeling to be able to help someone talk to and see relatives from all around the world.

“Some residents were slightly hesitant about the cost of the calls but once it was explained that Skype was free, they have been very keen to catch up and most importantly see people they haven’t seen for years.”

The computers have been provided by Simply Unite and Clear Computing.

Fiona added, “The timing of this grant is perfect because many of the residents were able to see friends and families over the festive season, even if they feel a long way away.”
