Eastbourne Soroptimists - meeting report

EASTBOURNE Soroptimists heard a talk about the charity Changing Faces at their meeting at Chalk Farm Hotel in Willingdon.

It is the group's chosen charity of the year, picked by joint presidents Marcia Fairburn and Carole Deschamps, and the talk was given by fundraising officer Ellie Barnes.

Members heard how Changing Faces works to change the way people face disfigurement, caused by injury, medical conditions or surgery, or from birth. It also raises public awareness and tackles prejudice.

The charity was founded in 1992 by James Partridge, who was severely injured in a car fire aged 18. It now employs around 30 people managing research, publicity, fundraising and counselling.

Miss Barnes said one million people in Britain suffer from some kind of disfigurement, although many are not visible or are minor. But others can lose their job through their appearance as disfigurement can be associated with villains.

Changing Faces has now launched a Face Equality campaign, with a website and posters featuring people with facial disfigurements leading normal, positive lives.

Eastbourne Soroptimists are part of Soroptimist International, a worldwide women's organisation which campaigns for and supports women, families and the environment.
