Eastbourne Pond Club commence summer pond visit programme

As the temperatures rise, our fish become more active, the aquatic plants push out new shoots and early varieties flower.

Moreover, members of Eastbourne Pond Club start its programme of pond visits. In true tradition Brian, our chairman, held the first of these outside social events on the second Saturday of May.

About 40 members attended and a further ten from the Bonsai Club boosted the numbers.

Our monthly meeting was held as usual on the third Friday of the month at St Mary's Church Hall, Decoy Drive, and a healthy number of members turned up to listen to Dr Jeremy Leach, an environmental health officer, give an interesting talk entitled Eating Out In Safety.

His talk was light-hearted and on numerous occasions hilarious, with good audience participation.

After the break, when Sue and Ian sold teas and cakes and members put their names down for forthcoming events, Brian gave a short talk on algae and blanket weed, its causes and various methods of keeping it at bay.

Brian also mentioned our summer fete, which is to be held on Saturday, July 18 at St Mary's Church Hall. Doug, our fete organiser, and his team have been beavering away in the background planning a fun-packed day.

The mayor of Eastbourne is opening the fete and there will be demonstrations on growing orchids, miniature landscapes, ponds, filters, fuchsias and much more. More details next month.

Membership is open to all who can get to meetings on a regular basis and who have an interest in any form of pond-keeping.

For further details ring membership secretary Steven Smith on 01320 483660.
