Plans are in the pipeline to turn Eastbourne Town Hall’s clock digital by next month.

The council is to replace the traditional clock face with an easy-to-read digital display in May this year in a bid to modernise the town’s landmark.

The clock will still chime every 15 minutes but the Roman Numeral clock face will be replaced with digital green glow-in-the-dark numbers on a black background.

Eastbourne Borough Council believes it will make the clock easier to read, especially at nighttime. Eastbourne will be the first town in the country to make such a bold move and it is thought that other local authorities will follow the town’s lead.

Some residents have described the plans as ‘ridiculous’ and have taken to social media to raise their concerns.

April Ticker posted on Facebook, “I have never heard anything so stupid in all my life. Does the council think Big Ben will go digital too. Beggars belief!”

Others were more supportive of the decision.

A Meads resident, who can see the clock face from her home, said, “It is a brilliant idea. The clock is so old fashioned. It is about time they did something to update it.”
