The Mayor of Eastbourne was the special guest in a popular Radio 1 feature this week.
Councillor Janet Coles answered a string of questions about Eastbourne in the game Mayor of Where hosted by DJ Greg James during his Wednesday afternoon show (September 16).
The regular game comprises a phone call with a mayor who is asked questions by Greg and news reader Chris Smith who attempt to determine the mayor’s whereabouts.
Wednesday’s episode started with Cllr Coles declaring, “I am the mayor, but the mayor of where?”
She was then quizzed about how long it took to travel from the town she represents to London, its most popular sport and biggest factory.
The presenters were left scratching their heads until they asked for the names of famous people who had lived in her town.
Among those Cllr Coles mentioned was Sir Alec Guinness which prompted Chris to correctly guess Eastbourne as he had read the actor’s autobiography.
After the show, Cllr Coles said, “It was great fun and an opportunity to talk about Eastbourne on the national stage.
“I was really surprised Chris knew I was Mayor of Eastbourne from the reference to Alec Guinness as not many people know he went to school here.”
The clip is available on BBC iPlayer.
