THE COUNTDOWN is on for the revival of the town’s carnival after more than 15 years.
Eastbourne Carnival is coming back to the town’s prom on the evening of June 2.
The idea of a comeback was initially conceived at a meeting of the MP’s Commission almost two years ago.
Commission member Dave Cooper has taken over the reins of the carnival, set up a group of volunteers and sent out expressions of interest. The group has already received nearly 100 responses.
Mr Cooper said, “I want this to be a real fun time for all – families enjoying the procession, businesses benefiting from the extra visitors to the town, for everyone young and old to enjoy a great night out – and for the town to wake on the morning after and think ‘I can’t wait for next year!’
“When we sent out the initial documents to gauge how much interest there was locally, I was astounded by the bombardment of the expressions of interest that came flooding back.
“We received enquiries from literally everywhere – individuals, community groups, schools, charities, limited companies, bands, dance groups – you name it, they were up for it.”
In the coming weeks the planning committee will contact everyone who has returned an expression of interest – and it’s not too late for new entrants.
Packs, which contain all details of the event, including safety information, road closure and insurance info, are available by e-mail or hard copy. Contact Stephen Holt on email@example.com or phone 733030.
Mr Lloyd added, “This will be a fantastic event for our town. There are so many good things happening in Eastbourne at the moment; our apprenticeship initiative, a street market coming to Terminus Road, the Arndale regeneration, improvements to Crumbles Retail Park and the opening of the new Morrisons in Hampden Park. Now the Carnival, on the eve of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, is the icing on the cake for me.”
