A TOWN centre road has been closed to traffic after a mysterious hole appeared.

Langney Road was initially cordoned off by the cobblers on Tuesday afternoon (June 7). Passersby said it looked like a small sink hole.

Highway engineers from East Sussex County Council were on site on Wednesday, closed the road and are due to excavate the area.

A spokesperson said teams would be trying to determine the cause and rectify it.

“If all goes well,” said the spokesperson, “and it is a straightforward void we are hoping to reinstate the area and re-open the road by the end of Friday.

“Although the visible hole is only some 350mm in diameter the void is quite deep – 750 to 800mm deep – and extends under the remaining road, which is why it had to be closed to traffic.

“We have arranged for remedial work at the earliest opportunity. We have also temporarily lifted the one way traffic order to allow residents to gain access from Cavendish Place and notices have been put up to this effect yesterday afternoon.”
