People from across Sussex have criticised a cyclist’s angry rant after a video of the exchange was posted on our website this morning.
The video, which shows an unidentified cyclist confronting a motorist in an Eastbourne supermarket car park, has gone viral with more than 7,000 people watching the short clip.
Readers have taken to Facebook to air their views on the cyclist’s outburst.
Dave Hyder said, “As a cyclist, from what I saw on the video, there was plenty of room for the lady to overtake and make the turn without affecting the cyclist.
“There are many drivers that do not give cyclists room or fail to indicate. This cyclist is not helping to educate the bad drivers and you do not swear at women. Not brought up well in my opinion.”
Ros Suarez said, “How that young lady managed to stay so calm and be so apologetic is beyond me. The cyclist clearly has nothing much to do with his life but look for trouble. As someone else has said, if it was a man driving the cyclist would probably have just driven on without saying anything. I am glad the young lady did not have children with her at the time as that would have been frightening for them. Someone in authority needs to have a word with him.
Jess Evans said, “The cyclist went way too far. The driver gave him plenty of room and turned in while he was still quite far back, vile man giving her all that abuse for nothing, he will look like a right tool when he realises how in the wrong he is.”
The video was originally posted on Youtube but has been shared widely on Facebook and on a national cycling website.
A spokesperson at the road.cc website said, “Helmet camera footage can be found everywhere from YouTube to the national media these days, and can also help convict motorists involved in collisions or altercations with cyclists, or who are simply enjoying their breakfast while attempting to drive a car.
“But are some cyclists overdoing it? Have a look at this video, posted to YouTube last month showing a cyclist remonstrating with a motorist he believed had endangered him after she overtook him then turned left into a branch of Lidl to do her shopping.”
In March last year a helmet camera video – recorded by an Eastbourne man – of an angry motorist abusive tirade became a massive hit on Youtube.
