A 38-year-old Eastbourne man appeared in court yesterday charged with false imprisonment and a threat to kill following a late night siege in Hampden Park on Monday evening.

Armed police were involved in a five-hour stand-off after reports of a man holding a person hostage at a second floor flat in Hazlewood Avenue in Willingdon Trees.

The road between Woburn Way and Croxden Way was cordoned off for more than five hours as large crowds gathered before two men were arrested.

Yesterday, Robert Anthony O’Connor of Cavendish Avenue, Eastbourne, appeared before Eastbourne magistrates charged with false Imprisonment, making a threat to kill another person and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He has been remanded in custody until March 8 when he will appear at Lewes Crown Court. A second man who was arrested by police following the siege was later released without charge.
