Eastbourne firms unite to boost apprentice initiative

KEEN to build on the success of the town-wide 100 Apprenticeships in 100 Days, Eastbourne is holding a week-long drive to highlight the opportunities available locally.
Last year businesses, colleges and the town’s MP Stephen Lloyd joined together to promote the positives of on-the-job learning and managed to exceed expectations by finding work slots for almost 200 young people.
Now, in a bid to attract more firms into taking on students, the town’s job centre is holding a drop-in event to coincide with national Apprenticeships Week.
On Monday, February 6 at the town hall, a host of businesses will be on hand to talk to young people considering apprenticeships so they can find out more about exactly what is on offer.
The session will run from 1pm until 5pm.
Among those confirmed as attending are Babcock, Baldwin Training, Campus Training, Carlton Property Management, Childs Play Training, Eastbourne Homes, Eastbourne Works, Freedom Leisure, Furniture Now, Hill McManus, JACE, JHP Training, JTL Training, Mears Groups, the NHS and Plumpton College.
The hope is that by introducing young people with potential employers, the town can further increase its already enviable record on apprenticeship.
Pauline Skilton, of Eastbourne Jobcentre Plus, said, “Work Experience and Apprenticeships give young people the skills and experience they need to take up local jobs.
“There are hundreds of jobs available across Eastbourne and Jobcentre Plus works with a variety of partners to ensure jobseekers have the support they need.
“We’re inviting all jobseekers, not just young people, and employers to come along to the town hall to find out more about how apprenticeships can help them.”
Jobseekers who attend on the day will also have the chance to speak to training providers and employers can find out more about the benefits of taking on an apprentice.

Monday, February 6, 2012 at 05:32 PMChatted to a local builder in the pub last night. He and his partner are deluged with work and would love to take on a couple of apprentices, but won't. Why? Simply because of the no win - no fee lawyers who encourage anybody who pulls a muscle or cuts their finger to sue their employer. Apparently it's rife in the construction industry and it can cost thousands to rebut such claims. For a small business such as my friend's, it's just not worth the risk. Perhaps Mr Lloyd might like to take that silly grin off his face, do his job and get these parasitic lawyers banned. Mind you, given that most MPs seem to have a legal background, I suppose it'll be the usual case of 'uman rights come first!

Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 03:08 PMBe interesting to know how many of those 100 apprenticeships are still running. They do seem to be virtually all in the service industry. Our rulers need to do a lot more to get our manufacturing industry up and running. I note that of all the authorised Olympics souvenirs and memorabilia, only 7% of it is being made in the UK! You can't run an economy and keep people in employment with only a financial and a service industry. Try and buy UK made clothing in any major high street store. It's impossible. Only Far Eastern made trash obtainable. OK for the teenage fashionistas who chuck it in the charity bag after a couple of months, not for us who like our clothes to be well made and to last!
