East Dean and Friston WI - May meeting report

THE PRESIDENT welcomed members to the May meeting and thanked May Thorne for the delightful floral arrangement.

Dorothy Stevenson, secretary, read the April minutes and our treasurer reported that our finances were in a healthy state.

A dozen or so members had been on the Bluebell Walk in Arlington earlier in the month and had been blessed with a fine day. The 2009 resolution urging the government to increase research into the health of honey bees was heartily approved and needed little discussion.

Then Margaret introduced our speaker, Johnnie Johnson, who came to talk of Sussex Customs and Superstitions. The first one he referred to was how essential it was to tell the bees what was going on. One should never neglect to inform them of births, marriages and deaths as well as any other important event.

Mr Johnson went on to mention many other odd supersititons such as fishermen never starting a voyage on a Friday, as well as the more usual ones about touching wood and throwing salt over the shoulder.

Sylvia Wheatley gave our thanks for a light-hearted and entertaining afternoon. We meet in the Village Hall at 2.30pm on the second Wednesday of every month except August and visitors are always very welcome. Do come to see if you like us.
