On a sunny October day members sang Jerusalem courtesy of Gerald Sweatman who came especially to play the piano.

Margaret Clegg welcomed members and thanked May Thorne for her charming floral arrangement. Dorothy Stevenson read the minutes of the September meeting and gave details of the Cuckmere Group meeting and of the Christmas lunch in December. Margaret then introduced Simon Hurt who is a member of the management team in charge of Eastbourne Parks and Gardens. We all appreciate the beauty of our seafront gardens but Mr Hurt was able to explain the changes in planting that have taken place. Although this year's poor

summer is still fresh in our minds, we must remember we had several years of very hot dry summers when bedding plants suffered very badly. So in the interests of economy, both of water and money, more exotic drought resistant plants have been introduced. The exception to this being the lovely Carpet Gardens. Mr Hurt was thanked warmly by Sylvia Wheatley for an extremely interesting talk. The next meeting, in November, begins at 2pm.
