CHILE is the theme of the next Pudding and Wine Club Lunch when Nick Kowalski, of Ventisquero, is the guest speaker. Chilean food and wine will be served, with a different wine for each course. Chef Michael Titherington will speak about the food and why each dish has been chosen to accompany a particular wine. The lunch is at the Langham Hotel, Royal Parade, on September 6 and is open to all - book on 731451.

ST JOHN Ambulance Retirement Fellowship meets at St John Headquarters, Bourne Street, on September 6, 2.15pm. ESK Gardening Club meets on September 6 when Sarah Khusal presents Nursery News, a round up of what is going on at your local nursery. There will also be an opportunity to get one-to-one gardening advice. Meetings are at the Garden Centre in Courtlands Road, 5.30pm-8pm. The Club is free to join and meets every Thursday in the summer months. Members also receive a 10% discount on plants from Monday-Friday. THE RNLI, local branch, next meets on Friday, September 14, when Mark Sampson will speak about the River Thames. A FIFTIES Night will be the next social and fundraising event at Christ Church and will be held in St Augustine’s Hall at 7.30pm on Saturday, September 15. This will be a nostalgic evening when a variety of speakers will share reminiscences of theatre, cinema, television, music, adverts, wireless, the food, the Royal Family, the fashions, and life in general in the 1950s. Tickets cost £8 and will include a ploughman’s supper and a 1950s style pudding of fruit in jelly - booked with Meg on 487229.
