A driver has been arrested after a serious accident in Upperton Road on Friday evening.

Emergency services and the air ambulance were called to the main road in and out of the town after a flat bed van collided with a pedestrian, leaving her with serious injuries.

The collision happened around 8.15pm near the junction with Selwyn Road.

The 29-year-old woman from Eastbourne suffered serious head injuries and was initially taken to the Eastbourne District General Hospital, but was later flown by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital.

She has remained in a critical, but stable condition over the weekend.

Sergeant Dan Pitcher from the Sussex Police Road Policing Unit said, “We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or who saw a white Peugeot Boxer flat bed van in the area in the time leading up to it. Please call us on 101 or email quoting Operation Sitar.”

A 45-year-old man from Eastbourne was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was later bailed July 11.
