DOWN YOUR WAY (July 31st): Hampden Park and Willingdon Trees

HAMPDEN Park is hosting a National Play Day tomorrow, (Wednesday), 1pm-4pm, on the field near the Rugby Club. This is a fun day for children of all ages, and is being led by the Eastbourne Borough Council Play Ranger.

ALL OF a sudden, our previously sodden gardens and hanging baskets are gasping for water, thanks to the ‘surprise summer’. So readers in Hampden Park and Willingdon Trees who have been preparing your front gardens for the Hampden Park in Bloom Front Garden Competition, it’s time for the last bit of tweaking for those flowering show pieces, as judging takes place on the morning of Friday, August 3. There are some substantial prizes on offer for the three winners, and certificates for all.

MANY local residents have enjoyed the various productions put on over the past decade by the Underground Productions Amateur Theatre Group which now meets regularly in the Hampden Park Community Centre in Brodrick Road. Throughout the decade, they have always been determined the theatre company would be different, inclusive, encourage absolute beginners and new audiences, and be very sociable.

On Friday, August 10/Saturday, August 11, starting 7.30pm, they will perform an exciting and varied production, which will include scenes, sketches and poetry references, from every performance they have ever done since they started. Entry is free, although a bucket for donations will be passed round at the end of the evening.

Everyone is welcome and for anyone who has ever considered joining an amateur theatre company, it will give a taste of what life could be like if you joined. More details on 01323 412357.

DOUBTLESS many of us, when we stroll round our park, admire the various plants, shrubs and trees, but do not know much about them. Now is your chance to find out more! On Saturday, August, from 11am outside the Lakeside Cafe, Tim Whelan, the Eastbourne Borough Council arboriculturist will lead a ‘Walk and Talk’, explaining about the various flora and fauna within our park.

ONLY just over two weeks to go, if you want to train your terrier or polish your pooch, in readiness for the annual Dog Show held in Hampden Park on the fields between the Cafe and the Rugby Club on Saturday, August 18. One exciting addition this year will be Terrier Racing. Find out more about this canine event from Andrea on 01323 724012. The day has been organized jointly by the Basil Fund, and South East Labrador Rescue.

WE ALL like plenty of advanced warning about interesting events, but this one is, believe it or not, for DECEMBER! The reason I have been asked to mention it is because there is to be a Christmas Craft Fair on Saturday, December 1, at the Hampden Park Community Centre in Brodrick Road, and the organisers want to give plenty of notice to those wanting to book a table to sell their wares. For more details call Margaret after 6pm on 07810 755787 or email lydmar2@hotmail.co.uk

FEW could avoid noticing how well the building is coming along for the new St Wilfrid’s Hospice on the outskirts of Hampden Park. But how many knew St Wilfrid’s cares for over 1,000 patients each year, and the new Hospice will give them the opportunity to help even more, in spite of the cost of £3,500 to care for each patient. Readers can make a valuable contribution to this charity, and have a chance to win some money at the same time! They have their own weekly Lottery Draw, and for the equivalent of £1 per week, your numbers could yield you cash prizes of up to £500.00. For Lottery enquiries, ring 01323 210222.
