GIGGLES in the garden: The Garden Growers Group meets on the second Thursday of the month (July 12, 7pm) at The Wheatsheaf. A marquee will be erected in case of rain. Guitarist Leo will sing some ‘gardening ditties’ and other members will recitr humorous poems they have made up, in the style of Pam Ayres. The group has held several fund raising events recently and at the ‘Giggles in the Garden’ Graham Broom, the main organiser, will present £250 cheques to representatives from St Wilfrid’s Hospice and the MacMillan Nurses.
JUDGING for the Willingdon in Bloom competition takes place July 12-July 16. The categories are private front gardens, window boxes, hanging baskets and containers, unusual and novelty gardens, educational and environmental establishments, and commemorative Diamond Jubilee gardens. Entrants will be notified of the results at the presentation evening on Thursday, September 13, at Trinity Church Hall at 7.30pm.
JEVINGTON & Filching WI meet at 2pm on Thursday in Trinity Church Hall. The speaker is Kate Arnold and her topic is ‘nutrition’. The exhibition is ‘an odd shaped fruit or vegetable’.
WILLINGDON WI meets at 2.15pm on Thursday at Willingdon Memorial Hall. The speaker is Mrs P Alsop - her topic Marks and Spencer.
CONCERT: Fr Michael, who was recently ordained priest and is based at St Mary’s Church, Willingdon, is one of the guest performers in a concert given by Lipsync, a Brighton Ladies’ Choir. The concert is at 3pm on July 14 in the organ room at Claycroft Farm House in Ditchling. The concert will be directed by Nick Andrews and other guest performers include trumpeters and cellists. Tickets, to include a champagne tea, are £12.50 and can be obtained from Fr Michael or Lesley Etwell. Ring the parish office on 501763 for further information. THE Ouse Valley Three return to the Wheatsheaf at 8.30pm on July 14 for some more of their quirky ‘toe-tapping’ southern-style music. Meanwhile Justine will entertain the customers at The British Queen.
SEE AND SING: A two session workshop will be held in Trinity Church Hall on July 14/July 21. The object is to explore some of the mysteries of music reading and vocal technique. It is intended for the complete beginner or early learner to develop knowledge, understanding and confidence in their own ability to cope in a vocal group. The sessions will be run jointly by Roger Malley, former musical director of Southdown Singers, and Brian Newman musical director of Heathfield Choral Society.
