BONSAI CLUB: The December meeting was a sociable one celebrating Christmas and marking the last meeting in the Hellingly hall where the club’s first one was held 16 years ago.

On Monday, January 14, at 7.30pm, the club moves to its new venue at St Mary’s Church Hall, Decoy Drive, Hampden Park, BN22 9PP for its AGM. New members are always welcome and the first meeting is free.

Chairman Brian Dale began the meeting by reminding members of the February Bonsai Show in Swindon and that a coach would be going, followed by a talk on method and importance of sharpening bonsai tools.

He showed various oil and water sharpening stones and diamond grit files and other useful items such as wire wool, scourers, rags and oil.

He stressed the need to clean and check tools for good working order before beginning the sharpening process and demonstrated how to maintain the original bevel and removie the burr edge before closing cutters and scissors.

Members then enjoyed a relaxed time for a photo competition of their bonsai trees, Christmas refreshments, raffle and friendly conversation and all had a chance to vote for their favourite photographs.

PHOTOGRAPHIC Society: The digital images competition round two was judged by some very brave club members namely, Gay Biddlecombe, LRPS, Terry McGhie, LRPS and Roger Scott.

There was some light-hearted banter from a somewhat depleted membership due to the inclement weather.

However, those that did attend had a very enjoyable evening especially the following whose images went through to the final: Swallow Cup (Beginners) - Suspension Bridge by Graham Wilkinson, Larking About by Martin Rumary, Between the Rails by Carol Parish, Waterfall and Through the Gap by Sam Daws. Sussex Shield (Intermediate) - Three Classics by Colin Christmas, LRPS, Split Personality and Goggles by Janet Monk,LRPS.

Arthur Hillman Cup (Advanced) - Against the Wind and The Rock by Gay Biddlecombe, LRPS, Reflective Skies and Dusk on Harris by Jan Cunningham, LRPS, Tuscan Mist by Janice Payne, LRPS Village Weaver by Terry McGhie, LRPS
