The 18-year-old added a fourth place finish in race two to take 88 points across the meeting and now leads Mexican racer Rodrigo Fonseca by 12 points after the first nine races of the season.

Following a day of wet weather testing on Friday, the 3.660-mile track, which the British Grand Prix is held on, was dry as all 20 BRDC F4 drivers headed out for qualifying on Saturday.

Palmer immediately displayed his strong pace, which would be a feature of the weekend, by posting a lap time of 2min 03.552sec with no driver able to get closer to his time.

The Southwater driver took up his position at the head of the field in the afternoon for the first BRDC F4 race of the weekend.

He set a new BRDC F4 lap record of 2-04.517 and as he came around to start his final circuit, had a gap of 5.056 over Ciaran Haggerty, eventually crossing the line 5.800s clear of the Scot with the Sean Walkinshaw Racing car of Jordan Albert third.

By virtue of his win in race one, Palmer lined up in eighth for the start of the second race of the weekend on Sunday morning.

He moved up into third, but as the condition of his tyres deteriorated in the closing stages, was overtaken by the Chris Dittmann Racing machine of Tom Jackson which relegated him to fourth, a position he would hold until the end of the race.

Due to his fastest lap across the first two races, set in dry conditions in the opening race, Palmer was on pole position for the final encounter of the weekend.

He was already over five seconds clear by the midpoint of the race having streaked away in the early stages and continued to extend his advantage, setting a number of fastest laps and as he headed onto the final tour, was 8.292s clear of Newey with Rodrigo Fonseca taking the final podium spot in third.

Each driver was presented with their trophy by Lotus F1 Team Third and Reserve Driver, and Will’s older brother, Jolyon Palmer.
