Dirty Dancing, the best-selling show that’s been on stages around the world, is coming to Eastbourne.
The stage adaptation of the iconic film will be at the Congress Theatre from Tuesday, January 13, and Saturday, January 24, and guests were given a sneak preview at a show launch at the Birley Centre earlier this week.
Producer Karl Sydow was joined by associate choreographer Glenn Wilkinson and dancers Lucy Martin and Faisal Khodabukus to promote the production with tantalising dance demonstrations and a brief history of the successful show. Glenn got the preview audience on their feet for a cha-cha masterclass and also gave an insight into how hard the dancers have to work - memorising and perfecting 95 completely different dance sequences.
The launch also saw the full cast for the UK tour announced. Gareth Bailey, who previously played Robbie, takes up the role of Johnny Castle, while Roseanna Frascona will adopt Baby Houseman’s character.
Dirty Dancing was first seen on stage in Sydney 10 years ago and has smashed box office records across the world. It came to the UK in 2006 with a record-breaking advance of £15m – the fastest selling show in West End theatre history.
In 2011, the show’s first ever UK tour was launched and took an unprecedented £42m at theatres across the country. It subsequently ran at the Piccadilly Theatre until February of this year.
Eastbourne is one of 11 locations on the nine-month tour, which also takes in Cardiff, Liverpool, Birmingham and Edinburgh.
