A COUPLE who met at Eastbourne Sea Cadets in the 1940s have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.
Maybell and Bill Aldridge were both born and bred in Eastbourne and met when Bill was in the Eastbourne Sea Cadets and Maybell the Hailsham Girls Training Corps.
The pair also attended dances together at the YMCA and YWCA in Bolton Road and at the Winter Garden.They were friends throughout their teenage years and started dating on the first anniversary of VE Day in 1946, when Maybell was 18 and Bill 17. They tied the knot in March 1951 at St Mary’s Church in Old Town.
Bill worked as a quantity surveyor at Cecil Baker and Partners for many years and became a partner of the firm before retiring in 1989. Maybell was a cashier and book-keeper. The couple had two daughters, Jacqueline and Gillian, are grandparents to two and recently became great-grandparents.
They have enjoyed their retirement for many years and had been playing bowls at Gildredge Park. Maybell, now 82, and Bill, 81, live in Church Bailey, Westham, and celebrated their milestone with more than 50 friends and family.
