Di Paola can’t wait for season to end to rebuild

Horsham manager Dominic Di Paola admits he cannot wait for the season to be over so he can get stuck into a complete overhaul.

The new Hornets boss saw his side crash to a 5-3 defeat in his Gorings Mead bow to relegation-threatened Ramsgate on Saturday.

The defeat made sure the 34-year-old is under no illusions of the task he faces in the summer to get Horsham back on their feet.

Victory at Tooting & Mitcham on Saturday - depending on Redhill’s result - is the only hope the relegated side have of finishing off the foot of the Ryman League South Division.

Di Paola said: “I really cannot wait for the season to end and I don’t think the players can either. They don’t know us and don’t know what we are about.

“We couldn’t train this week, which was through no fault of the club, you just can’t get these guy coming down when they are from the other side of London and further away.

“We will develop a committed side from afresh and start again. Get people in that are local and will stay around for a drink afterwards.

“They are all nice lads and I like the look of a couple of them, who I will speak to, but there is no real drive to do it for the club and you can’t have that.”

It was a bleak end to a home campaign on Saturday, but Di Paola knew when he took the job after the deadline of signing new players on, it would be a tough last few weeks of the season.

He added: “It is what it is and there is nothing we can seem to do at the moment to get them up for it.

“We have to grin and bear it and try to get set for Tooting on Saturday. With Redhill losing we can still finish off the bottom and that is our aim.

“We just need to start afresh if I am honest, I think we are finishing bottom to be fair. I thought they might have fancied it against Ramsgate when you look at who we were playing.

“We are planning for next year, we have already got a few friendlies sorted and I have spoken to a few players, who have said they are keen on coming. It’s early, but there are good signs on that front.”
