A damaged yacht which ran aground off the coast of Eastbourne at the weekend sparking a major sea search was winched off the beach this morning (Friday).
The wreckage of the Marie Celeste had been on the beach since Saturday morning after it started breaking up when it hit rocks off Beachy Head. Its skipper had to be dragged to safety from the vessel and he was later arrested by police and detained under the Mental Health Act.
Eastbourne Borough Council is responsible for clearing the shipwreck off the beach and had been working with friends of the skipper to get it cleared away and the authority will recoup its costs from the man.
This morning people walking along the seafront by Holywell could see a crane lift the boat off the beach. It was then set to be placed onto the back of a lorry before being transported into private storage.
