Train operator Southern is trialling an automated cycle hire system at Eastbourne, the first ever initiative of its kind at its stations.
The bikes are situated at the front of the station and are available for hire through bike hire company, YellowBike, for part of or a whole day.
To hire a bike, customers can either by visit YellowBike’s website at www.yellowbike.biz/welcome or by calling the bookings desk on 01425 462519. Hire of a bike also includes a helmet and lock which can be picked up from WH Smith on the station concourse.
The price for a day’s hire is £15 per day or £9 for a part day.
Station manager Graham Thrower said, “It is very exciting to be trialing this new technology.
“Cycling is very popular in Eastbourne and I hope that many local people, as well as visitors, take advantage of these bikes to get out and see the town and nearby countryside.”
Patrick Durrington from Yellow Bike said, “It is great that an established and well respected train operator such as Southern is ready to try new innovative technology.
“We hope that the trial at Eastbourne is a success and that we can get more people cycling in Eastbourne.”
If the trial is successful, Southern expects to roll out cycle hire to other stations on its network.
The bikes are situated outside the station near Subway.
